London Mayor Sadiq Khan has confirmed he is scrapping the Metropolitan Police' Safer Transport team, which runs the Roadwatch scheme.
The Police’s Safer Transport team has been instrumental in solving crime-related issues on public transport and roads. Most pertinently, they have run Bromley’s Roadwatch scheme, where local residents can join officers at speeding hotspots to catch dangerous drivers and issue fines.
Now that the Safer Transport team is being abolished, Bromley’s Roadwatch scheme has been put on hold indefinitely. This means that Mead Way, the road that Councillors had successfully placed on the list of roads the scheme covers, will not get coverage.
Cllr Thomas Turrell, who is also the representative for Bexley and Bromley on the Greater London Authority, which scrutinises the work of the Mayor, said: “Hayes, Coney Hall and Keston Village get a raw deal from City Hall when it comes to tackling dangerous driving – and we are already campaigning to see speed cameras installed in key speeding hotspots.
“The Roadwatch scheme is a valued initiative, allowing residents to take control and make a difference in tackling speeding. With its indefinite suspension, Sadiq Khan has put yet another nail in the coffin of efforts to make our roads safer.”
