Hayes & Coney Hall Ward Councillors

On Wednesday, I delivered my maiden speech in Parliament. Tradition holds that MPs’ first words in the House of Commons are lighthearted. They pay tribute to their predecessors, thank those who supported them, and praise their constituency.

Mine was no different, except for three things: I genuinely do represent the best constituency in Britain, have an exceptional predecessor in Sir Bob Neill, and the most wonderful family, without whom I wouldn’t be sitting in Parliament representing you today.

It is awe-inspiring to stand in Parliament, where the giants of history, from Benjamin Disraeli to Winston Churchill to Margaret Thatcher, debated.

But also in the knowledge that we owe our democracy today to the brave men and women of the last century who defended our country’s sovereignty, and this Sunday, on Battle of Britain Day, we will remember them, especially those pilots stationed at Biggin Hill.

I wanted to share that moment with you. If you haven’t seen it, you can watch my maiden speech below.

Once again, thank you for placing your trust in me and supporting me through a tough election.

Now that I have delivered this first speech, the Speaker will allow me to participate in debates and actively advocate for you, your family, and our community in Parliament.

Best wishes,
Peter Fortune MP
Bromley and Biggin Hill
