A planning application to coppice a total of 23 trees on land adjacent to 170 Croydon Road in Keston has been refused by a Council planning committee.
If permitted, sycamore, multi-stemmed ash and holly trees would have been cut down to their stumps and only the oak trees would have been left untouched.
Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Alexa Michael said: “Even self-seeded trees can grow into fine trees and trees provide a habitat for birds and other wildlife. A coppiced tree cannot. It is currently nesting season – if the trees were to be coppiced, they would be unable to do this. Far too many trees have already been lost on this and neighbouring sites in Croydon Road. Enough is enough.”
There is a chance that the applicant will appeal. If they do, the Council will defend its decision to refuse permission.
