New ticket barriers at Hayes Station feasible, says Southeastern

Southeastern has undertaken a feasibility study into the installation of ticket barriers at Hayes Station, following lobbying from local Councillors.
Southeastern has undertaken a ‘high level’ survey at Hayes Station, which concluded that the station would be suitable for the installation of both standard and wide-aisle gates. Their Facilities team will now need to undertake further work to understand where the gateline can be installed, taking into account the existing car park entrance, station facilities and retail units in the passage that leads towards Station Approach. They expect an update by May 2026, when funding arrangements from the central Government provide more clarity to the rail operators’ financial situation.

Cllrs Coldspring-White, Michael and Turrell have long called for ticket barriers to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour in Station Approach, Hayes. Local Councillors will continue to work with Southeastern, as well as Bromley & Biggin Hill MP Peter Fortune, to lobby the Government to introduce the measures as quickly as possible.

Cllr Josh Coldspring-White said: “Crime and anti-social behaviour are a blight on our community, and we need to use every available tool to stamp them out. Ticket barriers could play a role in helping to stem the flow of troublemakers on Station Approach. We’re pleased to see Southeastern provide more evidence that they could be installed without disrupting commuters.

“We have a strong working relationship with Southeastern and will continue to work with them to deliver these safety measures as quickly as possible – and urge the Labour government to provide the funding without delay.”
